As this article points out “WannaCry” is really just a wake-up call.

As our reliance on Internet-connected technology continues to grow we could encounter even worse attacks in the future.  It is very important that manufacturers of these devices allow their users to update and protect these devices.  Force people to change the passwords from whatever is the default to a more unique and complicated password.  If vulnerabilities are discovered in a device there should be ways that the owners can update them.
