Regular posting resumes tomorrow

I took an unplanned hiatus from posting to my blog because I had come down with a bad case of cellulitis in one of my legs.

I have lymphedema in both my legs but it is more pronounced in my left leg, which is the one with the infection.

Lymphedema usually affects a limb and it happens when the lymphatic system which helps the circulatory and immune systems. It causes fluid retention and swelling.

There is no cure for lymphedema, only therapy and self care to keep it in check.

I was wearing compression stockings during the day and sequential pressure pump at night but I failed to make sure my skin stayed healthy and a wound opened on my leg which allowed the infection to enter my system.

I ended up in the hospital on IV antibiotics for 4 days and then was sent home and had to keep my legs elevated as much as possible.

I am still going to an outpatient wound care center until they are completely healed and will be starting lymphedema therapy soon which involves manual lymphatic drainage which is a gentle massage that helps encourage the body to naturally drain lymph away from the limbs and towards the heart.

While there is no cure, with the proper care one can live and cope with the disease.
